Thise is a price binding of the Latin School in Delft: The Latin School in Delft was the only school with its own mark on price bindings: the Greek capital Ypsilon. The symbolism of this letter goes back to a story from Greek mythology in which Hercules, standing at a junction, needs to choose between a broad and a narrow road: pleasure and virtue. From around 1730, Delft price bindings were stamped with the coat of arms of the town which incorporates the school's logo. The motto ('per angusta ad augusta': through narrowness to blessedness) and the intertwined branches of thorn and laurel refer to the original symbolism (info Royal Library The Hague). Rare.
