Denis Pétau was a French jesuit, theologian and historian. He was one of the best chronologer of his time. In chronology, the science of measuring time, he exposes the shortcomings of his rival Josephus Justus Scaliger. He fought against filling op gaps in knowledge with hypotheses and referred to classical texts for support.
