[XVII Provincien] M.Z.

(1659), (6),3-283,(20 index p.), with engraved title and countless engraved double-page maps of the provinces, (folding) profiles and (double-page) maps of the cities, contemporary calf leather, gilt, ribbed back with morocco title shield, folio.

Good copy, complete according to the binder's index. Bookblock with sm. defects (e.g. some vague waterstains or foxing); binding trifle worn along corners and spine extremities, top hinge vulnerable. With old owner's name "Obermüller 1783" on free endpaper. Contains beautiful large folding profiles of Amsterdam (left margin cut somewhat shot), Rotterdam and Leiden (each ca. 20 x 65 cm.), double-page profiles of Antwerp, Bergen op Zoom, Bruges, Brussels, Deventer, Gent, Groningen, Leeuwarden, Mechelen, Middelburg, Nijmegen, Utrecht etc., double-page maps of the 17 provinces together and each province separately and many (double-page) maps of every important city. The first edition of this richly illustrated description of the 17 Dutch Provinces appeared in 1654. Two versions of the second edition from 1659 are known with an equal number of pages and illustrations, but with slightly differently engraved title pages and various small differences in the text and wood-cut ornaments. Our version is the one with the short title page and the binder's index, in which is unjustly asked for a map of Lille facing page 181. In our index and in the copy digitised by Google, this plate is deleted by hand in the index. To add to the confusion, the Google copy does have a map in the designated place, but this is from another work. In the version with the longer title page, the map of Lille is omitted from the index, which means that this version probably appeared later in 1659 than ours.
