(Free) endpapers and ties missing; parchment torn across top hinge. With old owner's name "Joannis Rosa I.V.B." (Ipse venenus bibas?) on title page. The author Johannes De Laet (1581-1649) was an important governor of the Dutch West India Company, who compiled a number of books in the Respublicae series for Elzevier. In 1630 alone 3 editions of this specific volume (on Gelderland, Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Friesland, Overijssel, Groningen and the two provinces not mentioned on the title, Brabant and Flanders) were published, this is the first edition of those.
