SOLD €750,00

[Pocket globe] Spherical wooden casing,

covered with black sharkskin on the outside and with two copper clips and copper hinge, on the inside with hand-coloured, engraved starry sky, no address, probably England, ca. 1750, diameter 7.5 cm.

Enchanting anonymous original casing for a pocket globe, not present here. No other copies traced of exactly this engraved starry sky. Characteristic for this copy is the mirrored projection of the starry sky (the tail of Ursa Major points to the right), thus as if the the viewer sees the constellations from the outside and not from the earth (geocentric). We found this with several English copies, incl. casings by John Fowler (ca. 1730), James Ferguson (ca. 1750) and Dudley Adams (ca. 1800).
