The work caused a stir upon publication and it was called dangerous and scandalous by the church and its clergyman. De la Court defended himself by stating that it had been published without his consent and that he denounced parts that were not from his pen. The work has been attributed to Johan de Witt (French and English translations (see the following lot) were published under his name). The truth has never been proven. Even the edition of 1669 was forbidden and in 1789 the work was banished again. Bound with: (5) Idem.
