A bit foxed. Goos copy w. unidentified bookplate w. mottoe "Mens conscia recti" on first free endpaper. The original edition. Willems, 488; Dekkers, p. 151, no. 2. Claude de Saumaise or in Latin Salmasius (1588-1653) was the successor of Scaliger at Leyden university. He defended the taking of interest in various ways; (2) E. Schedius. De DIs Germanis sive veteri Germanorum, Gallorum, Brittanorum, Vandalorum religione syngrammata IV. Amst., L. Elzevier, 1648, (32),505, (22 index) p., engr. title, contemp. overlapping vellum, sm. 8vo. Upper pastedown detached from board. With bookplate of the genious writer, scientist and scholar Edward Heron Allen F.R.S. (1861-1943) (his Bibliotheca Elzeviriana) and 19th cent. owner's entry of G.H.R. Denham on inside pastedown.
