The book was written as early as 1614, publisher Blaeu offered to publish it in 1616. Grotius mentioned this work often in his letters. The work strongly emphasizes the sovereignty of the state with respect to ecclesiastical power. It was placed on the indexes of 1658 an 1753. Spinoza had the book in his possession and adopted ideas in his Tractatus theologico-politicus (1670).. (2) De jure belli ac pacis libri tres (...). Ex altera recensione Joannis Barbeyracii (...).
