[Very rare printer's proof songbook] Johannes Pauwelsen (2nd half 18th century)

Collected volume with 10 letterpress songs with "Opdracht aan den heer overdeken en verdere regenten van het boekdrukkers, boekbinders en boekverkoopers gilde" (3 p.), signed in print Johannis Pauwelsen, c. 1770, altogether (62) (of 64) p., very finely bound by/ using rolls of the Rosette Roll Bindery at Middelburg in full gilt morocco, all edges gilt, oblong 32mo (partly waterstained, spine ends damaged).

Lacks the title page, but the book was undoubtedly produced in Middelburg; Johannes Pauwelsen is possibly the Middelburger appearing as a navigator in the Dutch East India Company archives from 1772 to 1776, and probably related to the 18th-century Middelburg publishers Hendrik and Jacobus Pauwelsen. Extremely rare master proof, no copies in PiCarta. The beginning of the dedication: "Heeren van het Drukkers Gilde, weest op myn verzoek zoo milde, van myn proef eens na te zien, die 'k u hier koom' aan te bien en eerbiedig op te draagen, 'k hoop zy zal u oog behagen (...)." Contains the following songs: Zielen-raad om gerust te sterven; Tegen de ingebeelde gerustheid (small hole in first p.); De gelukzalige hoveling; Morgen-zang; Boven-zang; De avond zon; Gods ligt en schijnsel; Gods verterend vuur; De scheppinge; Dienstbaare vryheid. See for the Middelburg Rosette Roll Bindery (active 1736-1772 or 1778): Storm van Leeuwen, DDBB, vol. IIb, p. 585-601.
