The first page w. dedication: "Den WeEdelGeboren Heer Hendrik Hovy en De WelEdelGeborene Vrouwe M.J. Hovy geboren Hooft, ter gedachtenis aan hunnen Behuwd Broeder Jan Messchert van Vollenhoven." Jan Messchert van Vollenhoven (1812-1881) was a Dutch conservative politician from a wealthy Amsterdam family of beer brewers and members of the Walloon Reformed Church. He was mayor of Amsterdam from 1858 to 1866 and held many different board positions, a.o. member of the supervisory boards of the West-Indische Maatschappij and the Paleis van Volksvlijt, chairman of the Nederlandsch Bijbelgenootschap and president of the supervisory board of the Hollandsche IJzeren Spoorweg-Maatschappij. He was also a member of Het Casino, Doctrina, Felix Meritis and Het Leesmuseum as well as director of the Hollandsche Maatschappij van Wetenschappen.
