Manuscript subscription list of shareholders on vellum, 60.5 x 70.5 cm, listing the names of the Provisional Committee (John Morris Esquire, Thomas Chapman and 5 others), above a list of 27 persons and their signatures, professions, places of business and residence (both almost all in Amthill), number of shares allotted, amount of deposits paid, the dates of the signatures (22 November to 2 December 1848) and in whose presence signatures were subscribed and deposits paid (all Frederick Churchill, secretary). Rolled and w. folds.
Interesting original document, providing a detailed inside in the foundation of the company and the local community of Amthill, listing among the subscribers a.o. George Allen (Manufacturing Chemist), William Bright (Innkeeper), William Claridge (Grocer), George Cook (Printer), Robert Furze (Farmer and Maltster), Thomas Gudgin (Butcher), John Marshall (Clerk to the Guardians of Ampthill Union) and Joseph Marsh Morris (Baker). The Ampthill Gas and Coke Company Ltd., based in Ampthill, Bedfordshire, operated from 1849 to 1935, when it was taken over by the Luton Gas Company. A minute book covering shareholders' meetings from 1849 to 1935 is held by the Bedfordshire Archives Service."
