The first edition of these emblems of Divine love appeared in 1615, this is the second edition. Otto van Veen (1557-1629) was court painter of Alexander Farnese, Duke of Parma and of the Archdukes Albrecht of Austria and Isabella of Spain, also instructor of Peter Paul Rubens. After 1600 Van Veen increasingly devoted himself to the publication of emblemata books.
