[Very rare proto-Robinsonade] Beschreibung des Mächtigen Königreichs Krinke Kesmes,

[= anagram of Hendrik Smeeks] welches eine grosse Insul, nebst vielen dazu gehörigen Eylanden, in sich fasset, und zusammen ein Theil des Unbekannten Südlandes, so unter dem Tropico Capricorni gelegen ist. ausmachet, worinnen die seltsame Lebens-Historie eines Holländers (...) erzehlet, und (...) beschrieben wird durch den Herrn Juan de Posos [= Hendrik Smeeks]. Leipzig, G.C. Winker, 1721, 2 parts with consecutive paging in one volume, (10),110; (2),111-255,(16) p., with engraved frontispiece before the letterpress title of part 2 and 6 engraved plates, contemporary calf.

Lacks the first frontispiece. Tanned and (water)stained copy; several plates tender; table of contents complete, but mostly incorrectly bound at the end (however, first leaf in the correct place), between the very extensive publisher's list with publications; binding damaged. Sold w.a.f. Very rare first German edition, only one copy in PiCarta (Amsterdam). The author Hendrik Smeeks (c. 1645-1721) also wrote under the pseudonym A.O. Exquemelin. The first printing of this pre-Robinsonade appeared in 1708, under the title Beschryvinge van het magtig koninkryk Krinke Kesmes (...). A second Dutch printing appeared in 1721, just as our German edition. The original edition may have served as a source of inspiration for Daniel Defoe. The second title is as follows: Der holländische Robinson Crusoe, oder das merckwürdige Leben und die besonders curieusen Avanturen Heinrich Texels Eines Holländers, welcher im Jahr 1655 auf dem unbekannten Südland (...) zurück bleiben müssen, alwo er dreysig Jahr lang in der Einsamkeit (...) endlich aber weder in einen glücklichen Zustand gesetzet worden (...).
